Hostility requires that you matter. The worse outcomes historically involve entities that never formed an opinion about you at all.

What we actually know
Almost nothing that has driven a species to extinction acted out of malice. Habitat is altered, a corridor is paved, a resource is diverted. The harm is complete and the intent is absent. Recognition, not aggression, is the variable that decides those outcomes.
Where the extrapolation begins
A visitor could damage humanity through misclassification — reading a civilisation as weather, infrastructure, or noise. The failure mode is not a war. It is not being counted as a party to one.
What the novel invents
The object has never threatened anyone. It has also never acknowledged anyone. Both facts have been on the record for ninety-three years, and CROWN cannot decide which one is worse.
