What Counts as Life?

Every confirmed organism on Earth stores heredity in DNA or RNA. That does not make it a requirement of the universe. It makes it the only successful system in our sample of one biosphere.

What we actually know

Biology has no single agreed definition of life. Working definitions invoke metabolism, self-maintenance, reproduction with heritable variation, and Darwinian evolution — and each of them excludes something we intuitively want to include, or includes something we do not. Viruses sit awkwardly against every criterion. Meanwhile our detection instruments are calibrated for terrestrial chemistry: liquid water, carbon backbones, oxygen-methane disequilibrium. We are searching for what we know how to recognize.

Where the extrapolation begins

Ocean worlds under ice, methane lakes, super-Earths beneath crushing atmospheres, and dense hot atmospheres are all modeled environments where a persistent liquid solvent is possible and human biochemistry is not. 'Temperate rocky planet' is a category pretending to be a fact — a useful shortlist that quietly deletes most of the search space.

What the novel invents

The novel leaves the Servator's builders undescribed, and this is deliberate rather than unfinished. Whether they are biological at all is never answered, because the story's argument is that we would not necessarily know how to ask. The intentional gap is the point.

Questions to think about

  • Write a definition of life. Now name one thing it wrongly excludes and one it wrongly includes.
  • If an alien system stored heredity without nucleic acids, which of our current instruments would still detect it?
  • Could something be alive, present, and unrecognizable to us at the same time?
